Motorola Takes A Walk On the WILDER Side

Motorola has been churning out Android phones left, right and centre of late so it’s interesting to see news of the WILDER, a rugged and water resistant touchscreen phone that forgoes Android as a proprietary operating system and uses Qualcomm’s Brew OS mobile platform.
It’s cheap too at around £80 SIM-free, but forget luxuries like 3G and GPS as this tough little cookie is 2G only. There’s no word on the IP rating of the device either aside from its splash and dust resistance, which is quite strange really considering the fuss Motorola made about the toughphone qualities of the forthcoming DEFY+. However, it’s probably it’s fair to assume that it will survive a day at the beach.
In the way of features, aside from the usual web browser and email client,  the WILDER is preloaded with a decent range of social networking apps and games and can even stream radio and video via YouTube, although we have reservations about what the experience will be like like over a 2G connection. The 2.8-inch touchscreen is pleasant enough and there’s a secondary OLED display at the bottom which scrolls useful information across it such as incoming messages and music track information.
Key specs are as follows:
  • 2.8-inch QVGA display, 262K
  • GSM 900/1800
  • FM radio
  • 2MP camera
  • 5MB onboard memory, support for up to 32GB micro SD
  • Embedded apps including Tetris, Need for Speed and Soundhound
The device is launching in Italy initially, but could head to these shores as a PAYG phone. Whilst it lacks the frills and spills of big brother DEFY+, the WILDER is nonetheless an interesting feature phone alternative to the more utilitarian tough phones on the market.
